1st and 2nd grade students at Green Valley have been working with our math coach, Ms. McMann on counting collections. The students worked in teams to figure out how to organize, group, and count different types of objects. This work was all student driven. The teacher asked questions but allowed the students to experiment and organize the objects on their own. The teachers differentiated the questions based on the complexity of the groupings. Those students that placed the objects in groups of 5, 10, or 20 were asked by the teacher how many groups of 10 (or 5 or 20) are in the total number of objects. This type of question focused on more complex ideas of place value. The students participated in a gallery walk to see the different types of groupings created by their peers and then had class discussions about what they observed.
