4/27/2018

Hello GV Families.

The year has seemed to fly by for our teachers and staff.  As you will see in this edition of the Gator-Aide, there is a good deal of events and activities planned for the next month and until summer break.  It is important to look over this newsletter and make note of any and all important events.,

Our kindergarten chicks have hatched this week.  Our students and teachers could not be more excited about their “birthday” this week.  Check out this live feed to see for yourself from home!

May the 4th Be With You!

May 4th, we will be celebrating technology, science, engineering, and coding!  The theme, as you probably have guessed is Star Wars. Students may dress as any Star Wars character or wear any Star Wars gear.

Lunch in the Courtyard

Please visit us and have lunch in our courtyard (see the picture above).  We have recently purchased new tables and umbrellas for our visitors and students to enjoy lunch outside in nice weather.

Bathroom Tissue Rolls Needed

Please send these in with your child.   We need around 300 for the May 4th special event!

Transition Nights

For students transitioning to a new school next year:

Elementary Transition Night:  May 1st 5:30 - 6:30

Middle School Transition Night - May 7th 6pm

Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night

Join us for Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night on May 1st.  This is also Transition Night so grab some dinner at the Galleria before attending if you are being rezoned.

Yearbooks

Yearbooks have arrived!  If you pre-ordered, they will be sent home on May 2nd.  If you did not pre-order, there is a limited supply for sale for $30. Please send in cash, money order, or check.

Author Visit

We are excited to have two authors visits on Thursday, May 3rd..  Nia Mya Reese a published author who attends Deer Valley Elementary, wrote “How to Deal with and Care for your Annoying Little Brother”.   Lou Anders, author of the Thrones & Bones series of middle grade fantasy novels will give a presentation for 3rd - 5th grades only.  Thanks to Ms. Sauls for organizing an exciting day!

School Lunch Hero Day

We are celebrating our Child Nutrition Employees on Monday, May 7th.  Please visit us for lunch on this day to tell our CNP workers how much you appreciate them!

Simmons Play

Simmons students will visit us on Tuesday May 8th to present a play to our students on our campus.   We are excited to have Ms. Kincaid and her students perform for us!

Field Day

Field Day is scheduled for May 11th.  Please be looking for information from Ms.  Howard about how you can volunteer to help. This is an excellent day to volunteer at GVES!!!

Simmons Tour

Fifth Grade students will have an orientation and Simmons tour on Monday, May 14th.  Students who will be zoned to Berry Middle School have been encouraged to attend Transition Night for information and a tour.

Party on the Playground

May 5th

Please plan to attend our Party on the Playground event.  We will have games, food trucks, laser tag, game truck, face painting, outdoor movie, and more!  Pay on myschoolfees or at the door. Click here for the official flyer! https://drive.google.com/open?id=1G0glEwBo10JwYH92h3TDPbbQ9o6MP6FR

Spirit Closet

If you have shirts or sweatshirts that have a Green Valley logo or lettering that your child can no longer wear, please consider sending this to our Spirit Closet for students who would like to have a GVES school shirt.   I would encourage fifth grade students and students who will be attending another school next year to seriously consider this option.

Kindergarten Kickoff

Any student who is coming to GVES as a Kindergartener should attend Kindergarten Kickoff on May 3rd from 5:30 - 6:30 with a parent.  The night will include an opportunity for students to spend time in kindergarten classrooms, a parent information session, and an optional tour of the building.

Insight Form

On Wednesday of this week, you should have received an Insight Form in backpack mail.  This will help us get information about your child for placing them in a classroom next year.  Please complete this form and return it by May 11th. If you are rezoning to another elementary or middle school, you should ask those administrators about their paperwork related to class placement.

School Supplies 2018-2019

You will be receiving information next week about GVES school supplies for the 2018-2019 school year.  You will be able to order through EDUKIT as we did this school year. Stay tuned for more information! If you are rezoning to another school, you should ask that school’s administration about their school supply plan when you visit on Transition Night (May 1st).

Attention All Parents: To comply with Alabama’s new Erin’s Law, HCS school counselors and administrators have created a plan to provide basic child sexual abuse prevention lessons for students. We have prepared a brief video that outlines plans for elementary, middle and high school levels. Please click here for more detailed information on HCS’s plan to implement Erin’s Law, including the option for your child to opt out of these lessons if you so choose.  Click here for this information in Spanish.
