Hello GVES Families,

Things are going smoothly at Green Valley this week.

Our first graders are studying fairy tales and they are being exposed to both classic and modern versions. They are also enjoying fractured fairy tales, which is a story that puts a funny or amusing spin on a classic tale.   I am excited to read to them on Friday of this week!

Our fourth grade students are working on learning more about division.   The teachers are always looking for engaging opportunities to provide for their students to learn concepts.  Last week, the teachers worked on Valentine’s Day Fractions.

We are excited to host guest speaker, Timothy Alexander.  He will be at our school on Friday to deliver an assembly related to student character.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.  Read below for other important information!

Safety is the most important aspect of my job.  I take this  seriously and understand what an enormous responsibility it is to keep our students safe.  We have in place, a very thoughtful plan for what we should do in emergency situations and have emergency drills throughout the year to practice.  Although our school system was rated number one in our state in the area of school safety, we can never be too cautious and thoughtful about how to improve.  I encourage you to attend the community meetings that Dr. Murphy is organizing.  The first meeting will be March 6, 2018 at 6pm at Spain Park High School and the second meeting will by March 8, 2018 at 6pm at Hoover High School.

PTO Board Members

We are in need of PTO members who are willing to represent our school next school year.  Our PTO Board Members meet with me once per month to make plans and improvements to our school.  Please consider contributing your time to help me plan the direction of our school.  Please call me directly if you are interested in getting involved.  439-2500.

Party on the Playground

Saturday, April 14th

Upcoming Blood Drive

During Party on the Playground, a blood donation truck will be available for adults to give blood.  You do not need to sign up in advance.  However, we do need at least 50 adults to sign up in advance in order for the truck to come to our location.  We will receive funds to be used to help our school for the blood donated.  PLEASE sign up now!

Art Show/PE Demo Night

Please plan to attend GVES Art Show and PE Demo Night on March 20th.  See flyer HERE.

Transportation Policy

Transportation changes must be submitted in writing and sent in to school for the classroom teacher.  Please do not call the school, send emails, or leave messages on voicemail related to transportation changes.  It is very important that we not miss important information related to how your child gets home.  The best method to communicate with us is in writing with your signature.  Thank you for understanding.

Attendance Policy

It is very important that your child is in school and on time each day.  Our teachers always provide make up work and follow-up instruction, but the best way for your child to stay on track with the curriculum and instruction is for him/her to be in school each day.  However, we understand that students may experience illness and need to be out for various reasons.  A doctor excuse or parent excuse must be submitted within 3 days of the absence.

Elementary Transition Night Related to Rezoning

Students at Green Valley Elementary are encouraged to attend the school for which they are zoned next year during the Elementary School Transition Night.  Please mark your calendar for April 12th.   I encourage all students to attend, even if the family is not being rezoned.  It will be a fun night!

Black History Celebration

I would like to offer a very special thank you to Mr. Kyle Moore who organized and led the Black History Month Celebration.  If you attended, I am sure you enjoyed the program as much as I did.

Pink Shirt Day

Hello parents!  This February 28th, our school will be observing Pink Shirt Day.  This is a way for our schools to promote kindness and combat bullying.  We are no longer selling t-shirts but even if you did not purchase a shirt, PLEASE wear pink on this day!!

Community Service

We sent home information about community service.   Students who participate in at least 1 hour of community service will be recognized at Awards Day in May.

Overnight 5th Grade Camp IMPORTANT

This year, our 5th graders will go to overnight camp.  They will leave on the morning of March 12th and arrive back at school on the afternoon of March 13th.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to spend together.  The permission forms are due February 16th but full payments are not due until March.  Please pay for this trip on myschoolfees or send in a check or money order.  Our goal is to have 100% of our students attend the trip.  Please contact your child’s 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Shar (school counselor), or Mrs. Gregory if you need to discuss the trip or payment..
